In July 1989, the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY, presented Valenti with a Lifetime Pass for his contributions to baseball literature. In 1998, to illustrate its exhibit on the manic home run chase between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, the Hall topped the display with an over-sized excerpt from Valenti’s book, “Clout!” Valenti began his writing career after graduating with a master’s degree from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication at Syracuse University. He worked for two daily newspapers for five years before becoming a full-time writer in 1980. He has written 13 books in all, countless newspaper and magazine articles, and his poetry and fiction have appeared widely in the regional and national literary press. Valenti is a frequent guest on radio and TV shows. For 14 years, he hosted his own general-interest, daily talk show (“The Dan Valenti Show” on WBRK AM 1340). The show won numerous awards, including “Best Talk Show” in its category from the Associated Press and finalist honors for “Best Talk Show Host” in the Boston Achievement in Radio Awards. Dan also hosted a Boston Red Sox pre-game show in the mid 1980s for WUPE and WUHN. Dan is a contributing writer to The Berkshire Eagle and the Pittsfield Gazette. He was a columnist for both papers from 1997 to 2006. He won the “Berkshires Week Readers’ Poll” as Berkshire County’s “Best Columnist” in 2000. Dan is adjunct professor of English at Berkshire Community College and is a frequent speaker. He lives with his wife Paula in Stockbridge, MA.
